Doom

The game that jump started the overly saturated FPS gaming market we live with today. Yes there was Wolfenstein 3D before Doom but it is said that over 10 million copies of the shareware version of Doom were distributed. Only around 1 million people actually bought the full version of the game but that was more than enough to fund future development. Doom was released in 1993 by ID software.

Doom received a lot of criticism mainly from, you guessed it, the religious community. I mean you are after all fighting demons from hell and there are satanic symbols scattered around in the game. It also received a lot of criticism from politicians looking for more pies to stick their greedy little fingers in. After all what good is being a politician if you aren't chipping away at the populations civil liberties but that's a topic for another blog lets get back to Doom.
There are several enemies to deal with from the lowly zombie to the very dangerous cyberdemon. There are also several weapons to play around with; pistol, shotgun, chainsaw, chaingun(uses pistol ammo), rocket launcher, plasma gun and the BFG9000.
At the end of each mission you are scored based on how many hidden areas you found, how many items you found, how many enemies you killed and time spent. And Doom is one of the many games available on Steam.

  5. I still prefer it to Quake, although that may just be the fact that I played Doom and Doom 2 first.

  6. I played the hell out of this game, always finding new spots and stuff, back before the internet was full of in depth guides.

  8. Doom is one of my favorites.....I think one of the things that made it so scary were the less-than perfect graphics. It had character.
